The Merlot-based wines of the region are traditionally considered less refined than those of Pomerol. However, cheaper real-estate prices in Lalande-de-Pomerol have brought on a new spate of investors intent on proving that fine wines can be made there—they may have gotten that idea from a famous Chateau named Pétrus situated only a kilometer from the Lalande-de-Pomerol border.
